la vittima

Today’s Parola del Giorno is the noun, la vittima, which means victim. This word can have several meanings depending upon the context. First, it can be used literally, as in the victim of a crime. Or it can be used more figuratively, to describe someone who is the victim of a disease or perhaps the victim of their own circumstances.  Let’s look at the contexts below:

Gerardo è stato vittima di un attentato ed è morto poche ore dopo essere stato accoltellato.

Gerard was the victum of a stabbing and died a few hours after he had been stabbed.

or

Non pensare che tutti ce l’abbiano sempre con te! Non fare la vittima!

Don’t think that everyone always has it in for you. Don’t play the victim!
