a stecchetto

Today’s Parola del Giorno is the phrase, a stecchetto, which can have several meanings.  It is usually used with the verb, stare, and can mean to go on a strict diet when talking about food or to go on a strict budget when referring to money.  See the expression used below in its context:

Dopo le vacanze di Natale cerco di mangiare sempre pochissimo e sto un po’ a stecchetto per cercare di perdere i chili presi durante tutte le feste.

After Christmas vacation, I always try to eat less, and I am on a strict diet in order to try to lose weight put on during the holidays.
