cogliere la palla al balzo

Today’s Parola del Giorno is the verb expression, cogliere la palla al balzo, which means to seize the opportunity.  See the expression used below in its context:

Quando Genoveffa ha detto che aveva delle vecchie coperte di cui sbarazzarsi ho colto la palla al balzo e ho chiesto se poteva darle a me. Posso portarle al canile e darle ai cani che le usano come lettiere o per coprirsi quando fa freddo.

When Genevieve said she had some old blankets to throw out, I seized the opportunity and asked if she could give them to me.  I can bring them to the kennel and give them to the dogs that use them as bedding or for covering themselves when it is cold out.
