l’abito non fa il monaco

Today’s Parola del Giorno is the expression, l’abito non fa il monaco, which means You can’t judge a book by its cover (literally, it means The habit does not make the monk).  See the expression used below in its context:

Matteo sembra un tipo scorbutico mentre è invece molto dolce e generoso. Bisogna conoscere meglio le persone prima che giudichiamo. È proprio vero che l’abito non fa il monaco.

Matteo seems a surly type while he is instead very sweet and generous.  One needs to know people better before judging.  It is very true that you can’t judge a book by its cover.
