il salume

Ciao a tutti! It’s been a while since we did a theme week, so I thought it was time to bring it back. This week’s theme is brought to us by the blog, Smiling Eggplant and its owner, Cynthia! Cynthia has also recently started a Facebook page, Italian food wordsa fun page that explains words and phrases related to Italian food and cooking. Let’s help her build an audience for her Facebook page!  You will be surprised what you can learn about Italian language by studying its food and cuisine!

Today’s Parola del Giorno is the noun, il salume, which means cold cut.  Cynthia warns us that we shouldn’t confuse salume with salame:  salame is a type of salume!  See the word used below in its context:

Il mio salume preferito è il salame, ma mio padre invece preferisce il prosciutto. Quando andiamo dal salumiere* compriamo sempre il salame e il prosciutto e a volte, anche altri salumi.

My favorite cold cut is salami, but my father prefers prosciutto instead.  When we go to the grocer, we always buy salami and prosciutto and sometimes also other cold cuts.

*NB: Un salumiere is the person who works in a salumeriaa shop where cured meats are sold.  They sell a variety of cold cuts, cured meats and other tasty items!  Some shops will even throw together sandwichs (panini) for their clients, at least in Rome they often do.
