la racchetta da tennis

Today’s Parola del Giorno is the noun la racchetta da tennis, which means tennis racquet.

Note the use of the preposition da. Did you know that one of the uses of the preposition da  is used with some prepositional phrases (complementi) in Italian to express a price (complemento di prezzo) or use/purpose (complemento di fine o scopo)? Some other Italian nouns that use this construction are:

  • il campo da tennis = tennis court
  • gli occhiali da sole = sunglasses
  • la macchina da scrivere = typewriter
  • un pranzo da 10 euro = a ten euro lunch

See the noun from today’s example used below:

La racchetta da tennis è lo strumento fondamentale per praticare questo sport. Senza la racchetta che colpice la pallina, infatti, non si potrebbe nemmeno parlare di tennis!
