lo stabilimento (balneare)

Today’s Parola del Giorno is the noun, lo stabilimento (balneare), which means beach resort or beach facility (click here to see some images). In Italy, uno stabilimento is generally a private section of a beach where individuals can pay a fee to use the beach as well as a beach chair and umbrella; they can be very upmarket or very casual, depending on the location and season. I am sure that many of you have seen photos of Italian beaches with rows of beach chairs and umbrellas.  See the noun used below in its context:

Quando io e i miei amici andiamo al mare, evitiamo gli stabilimenti e preferiamo cercare una spiagga pubblica dove non dobbiamo pagare una cifra enorme per goderci un po’ di relax in spiaggia.

When my friends and I go to the seaside, we avoid the beach facilities and prefer to look for a public beach where we do not have to pay an enormous sum to enjoy a bit of relaxation on the beach.
