pretendere

Today’s Parola del Giorno is the verb, pretendere, which can mean to demand.  The past participle (participio passato) is preteso.  Avere is used in compound tenses.  See the verb used below in its context:

Purtroppo, devo lavorare questo weekend:  il mio capo ha preteso che io passi il week end in ufficio per lavorare ad un progetto che scade lunedì e ci sono ancora tante cose da fare. Che palle!

Unfortunately, I have to work this weekend: my boss demanded that I spend the weekend at the office in order to work on a project that is due Monday, and there are still so many things to do.  What a bummer!
