spiazzare

Today’s Parola del Giorno is the verb, spiazzare, which means to catch off guard.  Literally, this word is often used in soccer (football), but it can also be used figuratively.  See the word used below in its context:

Quando Rosalia mi ha detto che sarebbe andata a vivere a Londra sono rimasto spiazzato! Non immaginavo facesse sul serio e decidesse di cambiare la sua vita di punto in bianco. Mi ha lasciato di sasso.

When Rosalia told me that she would go to live in London I was caught off guard.  I didn’t imagine that she was serious and decided to change her life out of the blue.  She left me flabbergasted.
