vivere da pascià

Today’s Parola del Giorno is the expression, vivere da pascià, which means to live like a king.  See the expression used below in its context:

Mamma mia, hai visto la nuova macchina di Giulio? Vive da pascià! Come ha comprato quella Mercedes?

Wow, did you see Giulio’s new car? He lives like a king! How did he buy that Mercedes?

Ciao a tutti! Today, I would like to ask that all of you who read these emails, visit the site and follow the PdG via RSS feed consider making a donation to help sustain the work that Giuseppe and I do. I have been running Parola del Giorno since 2006 — almost 8 years! The site came about when I was trying to take my Italian to the next level.  I found learning new words from lists or textbooks was boring. I also found that it didn’t help me learn much, especially if I did not know how to use the words I was learning. I then came up with Parola del Giorno.

With the help of some friends, I have been able to grow the site. In 2009, I finally added audio with recordings done by a variety of native speakers. In 2011, I partnered with Yellow Rubber Ball to create an iPhone/iPad app. The goal has always been to create apps for other platforms, but creating, publishing and marketing an app is expensive.  The iPhone/iPad app originally cost almost $1000.00 to create and publish, all of which I paid for out of my own pocket. The app has done better than I ever expected, but it is also in need of an update, and many of you have asked for an Android version which costs about the same.

I would like to raise $2500.00 (two thousand five hundred dollars) in the next three months.  These funds will: go towards the development of an Android app, help pay for web site costs and domain registration fees, and keep Parola del Giorno a free web site available to everyone to use. Every day I receive emails from readers and users who are pleased that such a service exists: I love sharing my passion for Italy and the Italian language with all of you. Please consider making a donation to Parola del Giorno so that the site remains free and operational!

Consider this: each day our email newsletter goes out to almost 2000 people, another 1800+ follow on Facebook, over 700 on Twitter, and another couple of hundred users visit the blog each day. If each person donated just $1, we would reach our goal instantly. We have built such a strong community over the years, and I would like to see Parola del Giorno grow, increase its readership and be even better!

Lastly, I just want to thank the dozens of people who have donated over the years. You have all been a tremendous help and extremely generous. Last year, we received enough donations to cover the domain registration fees and half of the web site hosting fees! Thank you again!
