il macello

Today’s Parola del Giorno is the noun, il macello, which literally means slaughterhouse or slaughter. However, it can also be used to describe situations or things that are a disaster or a shambles.  Figurative usage is quite common, and you will encounter it quite a bit. See the noun used below in its context:

Mentre andavo al lavoro stamattina ho dimenticato dello sciopero! Il traffico, le strade e i mezzi di Roma erano un macello e non riuscivo ad arrivare in orario al lavoro.

While I was going to work this morning, I forgot about the strike! Rome’s traffic, the streets, and public transit were a shambles, and I couldn’t get to work on time.
