Today’s Parola del Giorno is the expression al taglio, which, when combined with the noun la pizza, means by the slice. Literally, it means to (the) size, since the pizza is often cut to the size and weight that the customer wants. La pizza al taglio is often eaten at lunch and on the go. The pizza is baked in a metal pan and is square. It is called al taglio because customers can ask for as much or as little as they want, and the slice/slices will be cut to how you specify. You typically buy pizza al taglio by weight not by quantity. See the expression used below:

Molti italiani amano la “pizza al taglio”. Questo modo di vendere la pizza è molto diffuso, specialmente a Roma: la pizza viene esposta dietro a un bancone e il cliente può scegliere la quantità che vuole. Ci sono molti gusti buoni e differenti, per questo è consigliabile provarne parecchi!

Many Italians love pizza by the slice. This way of selling pizza is very common, especially in Rome: the pizza is displayed behind a counter, and the customer can choose how much he/she wants. There are many different delicious toppings, and for this reason it is advisable to try a few of them.
